More details are emerging on the tragic crocodile attack which ended in the death of a female Aboriginal ranger in East Arnhem land yesterday.

The woman was fishing with her family from a billabong near remote Gan Gan, near Nhulunbuy.

Police said the woman was waist deep in the water when the attack occurred.

The saltwater crocodile was found late yesterday and destroyed by local Indigenous rangers.

The woman’s body has been recovered.

Police were notified about the incident just after 10.30am.

Officers from Lake Evella and Nhulunbuy were working with local rangers and the community to search nearby waterways for the woman.

The woman’s body and the crocodile were found just before 5pm less than one kilometre from the scene of the initial attack.

NT Police Commander Tony Fuller said the woman was collecting mussels in a billabong with her family.
