Katherine Mayor Fay Miller has agreed the old cemetery, thought to still contain about 30 of the town’s pioneers, needed restoration.
Sections of the raised land on which the cemetery was located more than a century ago have severely eroded.
Alderman Elisabeth Clark also said the old cemetery was in poor condition.
Alderman Clark questioned whether the land remained in public ownership and whether some parts of it were now privately owned.
Most the cemetery area, off Gorge Road, is surrounded by a single strand wire fence but is not signposted or marked.
