The usual American tradition of door knocking for sweets was swapped out for a bit of a twist on the usual fare. 

“In one spot, parents can bring their kids out for trick-or-treating, it is a good fun way for kids to participate without annoying their neighbours,” Trunk-or-Treat organiser Tenille Anning said. 

“It is much safer than wondering the streets. 

“Parents can get involved too and really let their creativity flow by decorating their car boots. It is a win win for everyone.”

According to the Katherine resident of 10 years, this year’s event saw more than double the amount of children and parents dressed up and on the hunt for a sweet fix. 

“Last year was great, we had about 150 kids come along, but this year has surpassed my expectations. We counted about 350. 

“It was good because the cars were not over the top. There was nothing too spooky,” Ms Anning said. 

But that is not to say the car boots were under-decorated. Cars were revamped with carved pumpkins, creepy string cobwebs, and of course spiders, mummies, and skeletons and lots of lollies. 

The Halloween tradition is taking Australia by storm. 

Ms Anning, a Halloween enthusiast herself, puts it down to the rise in popularity in scary movies and a new generation of parents coming through. 

“The generation of kids who were not allowed to participate in Halloween when they were younger have grown up and are having kids now. 

“I think they see it as a good fun night of dressing up instead of an American tradition not worth celebrating.

“People are more open to the idea that it is just a fun holiday,” she said.
