FrogID is a national citizen science project that is helping us learn more about what is happening to Australia’s frogs. All around the country, people are recording frog calls with nothing more than a phone.
The very clever people at the museum have produced a fantastic frog identification app that you download onto your smart phone. It’s an easy to use addition to your app library and freely available from the app store of your choice. Frog ID has great photos, easy to understand descriptions, froggy location information and even the strange and wonderful calls of our damp little mates.
Australia has over 240 known species of frog, almost all of which are found nowhere else in the world. Some species are flourishing, like the Green Tree Frog, but others have declined dramatically since the 1980s, and four have become extinct.
Frogs are a sign of a healthy environment and by counting our frogs we can learn more about where they are and how they, and their homes are doing.
There’s no way scientists can count Australia’s frogs on their own. The country’s too big and there’s too many frogs! That’s where you, dear reader, come in. With FrogID, citizen scientists just like you can help the Australian Museum put frogs on the map!
Take part in FrogID Week, Australia’s biggest frog count. Australia's frogs are under threat and taking part in FrogID Week will give our scientists with valuable data for the protection and conservation of frogs.
With the data obtained through FrogID scientists will be able to track the Cane Toad and identify where native frogs are thriving and where they aren’t. Frog calls recorded with the app can be matched to weather and habitat data increasing our knowledge about how different frog species are responding to a changing environment.
This information could be crucial in saving Australia’s frogs.
