A group of seniors met with her last week saying they wanted more done to combat local crime.
“I meet regularly with constituents to hear their concerns and opinions, and crime is something I constantly raise with my colleagues,” Ms Nelson told Katherine Times.
“I have weekly meetings and discussions with police and Katherine-based government agencies to ensure we are all working together to support and serve Katherine residents.
“As I have said time and time again about any program or initiative to prevent the negative impacts related to alcohol abuse - it must be rolled out universally, simultaneously.
“Justice Riley rightly acknowledged that maintaining a police presence would complement the BDR and aide greatly in maintaining law and order during the transition period, particularly in communities such as Katherine.
“I have seen firsthand the positive impact police in front of bottleshops can have on our town, and that’s why I fought hard to get Police Auxiliary Liquor Inspectors in place as soon as possible – with the first cohort starting in January.
“The NT Government has also boosted police numbers across the Territory, including in Katherine, and ensured they are equipped with the best resources possible to do the tough job they have.
“Officers in Katherine continue to work tirelessly on detecting and deterring secondary supply and the irresponsible sale of alcohol within our community – this recently resulted in a licenced premise in Katherine shut down for 48 hours by the Commissioner of Police.
“We have also expanded the public housing safety officer program in our town and installed more CCTV in hotspot areas.
“I will continue to make sure Katherine receives the same attention as elsewhere in the Territory when it comes to fighting crime.”
