The select committee on a NT Harm Reduction Strategy for Addictive Behaviours is holding a public hearing and a public forum in Katherine on Monday, December 10.

“Addictive behaviours, particularly those related to illicit drugs, alcohol and gambling, have a terrible impact on individuals, families and communities. If we are to reduce these impacts we need to understand the issues from both an individual and community perspective”, committee chair Jeff Collins MLA said.

“Reducing harms and providing effective treatment is particularly challenging in regional and remote areas.

“The committee wants to hear directly from community members about their concerns and the steps needed to reduce harms in their community. We encourage all interested people to come to the forums and share their views and experiences,” Mr Collins said.

The Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory set up the Select Committee to look into the extent and effectiveness of current harm reduction practices and treatment programs in the NT and to identify actions the Government can take to improve these.

The committee will be holding a public forum where anyone can come and talk with the committee.

The committee will also be holding a public hearing where invited witnesses will speak to the committee. Anyone may come and watch the public hearing.

Committee members are Jeff Collins MLA (chair), Sandra Nelson MLA (deputy chair), Kezia Purick MLA, Gary Higgins MLA, and Paul Kirby MLA.

The forum will start at 5pm in the Wurli-Wurlinjang Health Service Board Room, 9 Second Street, Katherine and end at 6pm.

The Hearing will commence at 12.30pm in the Wurli-Wurlinjang Health Service Board Room, 9 Second Street, Katherine and conclude at 4.15pm.
