Waste management facilities at Wadeye and Peppimenarti will be upgraded as part of the NT Government’s $5.1 million investment in infrastructure in regional and remote areas.
The grant of over $1 million comes from the Strategic Local Government Infrastructure fund which offers regional and shire councils the opportunity to boost amenities and improve community development.
The grant, offered to the West Daly Regional Council, will be used for new landfill sites at Peppimenarti and Wadeye to address flooding and other health issues related to waste management and to construct secure fencing at Peppimenarti.
One of the sites will be established as a regional waste management centre.
Mataranka is also set to benefit with $500,000 to go towards the construction of a regional hub at the Roper Gulf Regional Council office.
The council, which has sought additional funds from the Federal Government for the project, plans to use the funding primarily to renovate the council library.
Other SLGI funds have also been granted for various works at communities in the Coomalie, Belyuen, Barkly, Central Desert, MacDonnell and East Arnhem regions.
Projects include the refurbishment of a council staff house at Elliott, footpaths at Angurugu, an extension to the Alice Springs office occupied by the Central Desert and MacDonnell regional councils and the construction of a shade cover over the basketball court at Wutunugurra.
Minister for Housing and Community Development Gerry McCarthy said the Territory Labor Government was focussed on creating jobs for Territorians.
“We are very keen to support projects like these that not only support regional councils’ efforts to improve waste management practices but create work for locals,” he said.
“This annual funding program allows councils to apply for one-off infrastructure projects that are additional to their budgeted works with the big winner being regional and remote communities.”
