The announcement came yesterday morning at 7.05, as the Katherine River level has slowly started to increase with the start of the wet season.
Despite a late start to the season and only small amounts of rain around the township, the surging river is flowing over the embankment.
“The low level is currently closed due to a water level alarm,” the Katherine Police announcement said.
“Please use an alternative route if possible.”
Katherine is expected to get up to 5mm of rain today in some areas, with the temperature expected to reach 36 degrees before cooling down to 24.
The warm weather is expected to continue through the week with a top of 35 on Tuesday, 34 on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and 36 degrees on Saturday.
Thunderstorms are forecast for the rest of the week with only small amounts of rain.
The rise in the river level has already closed the Hot Springs as well as other swimming spots around Katherine.
