Victoria is leading the export charge among new Northern Territory teachers, with nearly one quarter of this year’s 170 recruits migrating from the southern state to take up their new roles.
Education Minister Selena Uibo today welcomed the new 2019 teachers at their orientation in Darwin, ahead of their start at Territory schools.
School resumes next week, with urban students back next Tuesday, January 29 and remote students returning next Wednesday, January 30.
The teacher orientation program gives new school staff an opportunity to familiarise themselves with teaching in the Territory, including cultural awareness sessions, which equip teachers heading out into remote communities with the skills they need for successful tenures.
Of the 170 new recruits, more than 40 are male.
Nearly 70 of the new teachers are heading out to work in remote schools.
Breakdown of origin of new NT teaching recruits: Victoria 41, NT 33, WA 27, NSW 22, Qld 20, SA 14, Tasmania 2, ACT 1.
Ms Uibo said she was pleased to welcome 170 new teachers to the NT who will make a difference in young lives.
