This year, the annual charity event was held in honour of Wayne Stubbs who was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer in November of last year.
A firefighter of more than 12 years, Mr Stubbs has contributed countless hours to the Katherine community, providing peer support to fellow firefighters, teaching and mentoring the younger generation and going the extra mile to give a helping hand.
“We pick a charity every year to donate money and this year it was such an obvious choice,” event organiser and Katherine Club manager Alison Vincent said.
“[Wayne Stubbs] has done so much for the community, he is always giving back.
“This is just a nice way to help him and his family because there is so much cost in battling any illness.”
Mr Stubbs attended the Australia Day celebration and said he was “very humbled” by the community support.
“I have never doubted in my mind loving Katherine and the people here, there has just been so much support,” Mr Stubbs said.
“As soon as I have kicked this I will be back in the community helping out and advocating for other people going through what I am going through.
“It is tough and you need support behind you,” he said.
The 7.30am event attracted about 200 early risers as well as Police, Fire and Emergency Services.
