There was about 15-20 minutes of pelting rain from about 6.25pm, with enormous wind, thunder and lightning.
The storm lost its intensity after an hour but there remains a lot of lightning in the area as the storm continues to move north.
Wind gusts were recorded at more than 60kmh at Tindal during the peak of the storm.
Trees are down in Holtze Crescent and Acacia Drive and likely many other areas.
Some areas still have power although the CBD and Katherine East is still without.
Motorists are urged to take care as the traffic lights in the main street are still out.
Power and Water Corporation says crews are out and working on restoring power to Katherine, also Barunga and Beswick.
