A total of 58mm has already been officially recorded by the Bureau of Meteorology with the storm action continuing after the first falls began about 3am.
The total eclipses the 46mm on January 2 and the 38mm on November 29.
Katherine has had a poor start to the wet season with 181mm in January against an average 268mm.
The Katherine River at the railway bridge is unusually low still at 3.2 metres but it is rising.
The forecast is for the chance of storms to continue for the rest of the week.
