The new Katherine fire station is on track to be completed by next month.
The $8.5 million project has been taking shape rapidly, and without the usual downpours which come with the wet season to hinder progress, should be ready for a March move in date.
The new station is being constructed next door to the newly built ambulance station, in the industrial area.
The big move will allow the fire fighters to relocate out of the overcrowded police headquarters – resulting in more room for Katherine’s new group of Police Auxiliaries.
“The Katherine fire station is progressing well with external paint work, fittings and landscaping currently taking place,” a Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics spokesman said.

“The internal fit out is also underway and the project is on track to be completed by the end of March 2019.”
Construction began in September of last year, by C&R Construction, a Darwin based construction company – the same company contracted to build the Katherine ambulance station.
The new facility will:
- accommodate fire crew/staff and be available for after hours use by volunteers
- provide a venue for training
- offer a work space for vehicles and safety equipment
- provide shelter for fire fleet on standby
- allow for further expansion to enable the facility to service the community into the future
The new facility is expected to bring a range of benefits to the community including more jobs and better emergency service to the Katherine region.
