Crime numbers have risen steeply in Katherine over the past year, with shop break-ins up more than 160 per cent.
The NT Government says it wants to put victims first and wants local residents to tell them how.
The Government is holding public information sessions on a discussion paper it says aims to improve the NT’s financial assistance scheme to better support victims of violent crimes in particular.
Perhaps there are other crimes the government needs to look at as well.
Meetings are being held across the NT with the Katherine meeting on Friday, March 1 from noon-1.30pm at the Level 1 conference room in the First Street Government Centre.
- The discussion paper also looks at reforms to include:
- Introducing victim-offender conferencing for adult offenders in the NT, and;
- Improving restitution and compensation orders made under the Sentencing Act.
Territorians can provide feedback on the discussion paper and find out more about the information sessions through haveyoursay.nt.gov.au or by emailing Policy.AGD@nt.gov.au
Attorney-General Natasha Fyles said: “The Government is putting victims first with public information sessions on the Victims of Crime Discussion Paper starting today – we recognise the importance of victims’ rights in the justice process.
“We invested $450,000 into youth victim conferencing because it reduces re-offending and victims of crime are more satisfied with the justice process when they are given a voice.”
