This time it has awarded a national firm of architects almost $300,000 to design the $4.4m upgrade at the sportsgrounds.
Hames Sharley Architects, which has an office in Darwin, won the contract at a special council meeting held last week.
At the ordinary council meeting several weeks ago, council awarded another Darwin firm almost $400,000 to come up with a master plan for the $5 million CBD Revitalisation Project.
Ashford Group Architects will be in charge of finding out the best way to use the NT Government funds.
Katherine Times understands there will be a meeting with Katherine business owners and the new consultants next week to progress the CBD consultation.
For the sportsgrounds, Hames Sharley Architects will "deliver the design of a new sports pavilion facility between the existing ovals, safety enhancements to the entry road infrastructure, landscaping and parking improvements".
The money long promised for a new community centre in Katherine, a pre-election promise of Katherine MLA Sandra Nelson, once touted for the abandoned Katherine Sports and Rec Club in Giles Street, has now been given to council for the sportsgrounds development.
It is understood the new sports pavilion is to incorporate the mooted community centre.
The price for the sportsgrounds consultants came in about $100,000 less than budgeted for, council has been told.
Council has already voted to spend $300,000 of the $4.4 million to redevelop the Don Dale pavilion and $200,000 from its own reserves to fix the No. 2 oval in the sports precinct.
The Federal Government last week committed a further $200,000 towards fixing the second main oval.
