The latest crime statistics still show Katherine has the biggest crime spikes of anywhere in the NT.

Commercial break-ins have now reached 332 year on year, a rise of 201.8 per cent.

Commercial break-ins in Alice Springs rose 18 per cent, in Palmerston 25 per cent, in Darwin commercial break-ins were down five per cent.

For Katherine it is still an improvement on the previous month when shop break-ins jumped 223 per cent.

It appears even worse when compared to break-ins from 2017 - which reached 96 in previously supplied numbers.

The latest police statistics are from the year ending January 31, 2018 compared with the year ending January 31, 2019.

House break-ins continue to rise sharply as well, up 34 per cent.

Assaults have now reached almost two a day, at 603 across the year - a rise of 13 per cent.

Car thefts are up 23.5 per cent.

The only category which is sexual assault down to 28 reported cases in the past year, a drop of 20 per cent on the previous year.

Acting Commander Brendan Muldoon said the new liquor inspectors began work in January in an effort to reduce alcohol-fuelled violence within the community.

"While their presence is very new to the Katherine area, I am looking forward to seeing how their presence plays a role in reducing crime in the region over the coming months," he said.

"Property crime in Katherine, particularly break-ins of private and commercial premises, was still significantly up."

Commander Muldoon said police are committed to working with the community to reduce property crime within the town.

Commercial unlawful entries, motor vehicle theft and property damage are all interlinked.

"Through our intelligence gathering we understand that when offenders are breaking into premises, they are damaging property within and generally stealing car keys or other small tangible property items; seldom are they stealing larger items of property from within residential or commercial premises," he said.

"During the month of January, it became evident to police and the community that property crime was on the increase; this was a concern to the police as much as it was the public.

"For that reason Operation Pelion commenced. Katherine Divisional Superintendent Daniel Shean commenced engaging with repeat victims and discussing crime reduction strategies including the Biz Secure grants that are available to businesses to help increase the security on their premises.

"Operation Pelion seeks to reduce property crime in Katherine whilst enhancing community confidence in police. Operation Pelion members and the Katherine Police are taking positive proactive policing approaches when dealing with property crime offenders and ensuring that property crime offenders are being held to account for their actions.

"I am confident with the police (targeting offenders and holding them to account for their actions) working together with the community (reducing the opportunity for crime by improving security to premises and locking premises) that we will see a reduction in property offending for the month of February."

Police will continue to promote crime prevention strategies.
