Buy a plastic token instead.
Katherine is one of the few stores, Woolworths won't say how many there are, which offers the plastic token to unlock your trolley rather than a gold coin.
Our Pine Creek man, who did not want his identity disclosed, but said he was 80 years old, said he was confronted by several people wanting his dollar coin when he was shopping in Katherine last week.
"It was all pretty angry and I am pretty frail.
"I was taking the trolley back to a trolley bay in the car park and I was asked, quite forcefully, to hand over my dollar," the man said.
"I use a white plastic token which I took out and showed them and they left me alone, after a few choice words I might say."
The man said he obtained the plastic token by asking at the Woolworths information counter.
The tokens are available to purchase at the store, a Woolworths spokeswoman agreed.
"In line with local government requirements, all Woolworths trolleys at the Katherine store are fitted with coin and token operated locks."
The man said some people might not be aware the tokens were available and it could save a car park confrontation.
