Brian Roberts, a 63-year-old amputee, spent his days helping the hundreds of people who passed through the Katherine Doorways Hub on a daily basis.

Known best as the "toast man" he will be leaving behind his dedicated post at the Hub, as well as the many people who came to rely on his friendship.

Spreading good cheer on a daily basis, Mr Roberts had recently overcome years of grueling pain, hospital visits and medication.

It was on a nightmare fishing trip two years ago that he received a small scratch on his leg, which resulted in something much worse.

While at the time he thought it was an insignificant scrape, what had set in was melioidosis, an infectious disease found in soil and water, mostly in the NT.

The Katherine Times was lucky to have interviewed the happiest amputee in Australia, last month.

At the time of the interview, Mr Roberts had undergone life-changing surgery just four weeks prior, removing his leg above the knee.

Much to the amazement of staff and visitors at the Hub, Mr Roberts didn't miss a beat and was back at his toasting post in record time.

Despite varied health concerns on top of the amputation, he had a positive outlook on life and was happy to be helping people in need.

"I like helping people, it is in my heart," he said at the time of the interview.

"I live a bit of a lonely life, just me and my dog, and I had plenty of time to do good deeds."

A funeral service is yet to be announced.
