"It will be a relaxing oasis in the Katherine Region," she said.

Ms Plibersek was in Katherine today with Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon and Minister for Education, Selena Uibo.

The trio also visited Katherine High School and MacFarlane Primary School as part of a series of funding announcements.

The election promise could see the Katherine pool, now 30 years old, renovated and expanded to create a tourist attraction enviable of bigger cities like Darwin, which already has its own water park.

"There will be a new kids pool, a toddler play pool, and a separate water play area for older children," Ms Plibersek said.

"This major upgrade will also include a new sand floor lagoon.

"The existing lap pool will be renovated, and there'll be BBQ areas and extra shade sails - so families can enjoy the Katherine Pool all year round."

Mr Snowdon, said the new water park and lagoon was great news for young people in Katherine.

"About 20 per cent of Katherine residents are younger than 19," Mr Snowdon said.

"The new water park and lagoon at Katherine Pool will give young people a safe place to catch up and have fun.

"A water park already exists in Darwin and the reality is this is an important infrastructure for Katherine residents who often miss out living so remotely.

"I will work closely with the Katherine Town Council to deliver this important upgrade," Mr Snowdon said.

Today's commitment is for an extra $4.4 million of funding, on top of the $600,000 announced by Labor about two weeks ago.

Katherine Mayor Fay Miller said residents have been asking for improved facilities at the pool for 15 years.

"Sporting groups and residents have been asking for improvements for a long time now," she said.

"People have spoken about a BBQ area and a play area."

The Katherine water park is currently in the planning stages awaiting funding.
