Jumping from place to place in order to meet up for their monthly events, the Appaloosa and Western Performance Club was in jeopardy of falling through the cracks.

"We only had five or six meet-ups last year because we didn't have a permanent home," president of the club, Vicki Williams said on Sunday.

The club was meeting up for the first time this year on a grassy patch of the Katherine Showgrounds, shaded and surrounded by horse stalls, where curious riders were invited to take part in a come-and-try-day.

"We were lucky to be able to use the pony club venue, but there was often a clash of events, or we would go out to someone's property," she said.

"It has been a difficult couple of years where we haven't been able to maintain the amount of events and training we would like to."

With a dedicated space at the Katherine Showground's equestrian warm up area the club will be able to store their equipment and meet up on a regular basis for training and information sharing.

Long-term western performance rider and newcomer to Katherine, Thea Griffin was just one of the Sunday attendees interested in joining the club.

Chasing NT competitions and like minded riders, the club is a good pathway to get back into regular training.

"It is about a strong connection with your horse and working together to get a job done," she said.

Growing up on stations, she was feeling the pull of the country, living on the coast of Queensland, and so moved to the Territory three weeks ago taking up a role with Roper Gulf Regional Council.

"I really wanted to come to the Territory to immerse myself in the life style. I love being around horses and horsey people."

Western performance riding is based off american-style riding on ranches.

"Doing obstacles and patterns are a key component to western performance riding," Ms Griffin said.

"Riders are judged on accuracy and on how well they communicate with their horse - it involves a lot of self discipline.

"In a world of fast food and commercialism this is something real."
