The body of the Katherine father of two was recovered from the Victoria River this week after a fatal crash while flying his gyrocopter near Timber Creek late last week.
It is believed Mr Russell was in the process of taking off from the Timber Creek airstrip, adjacent to the NT/WA border, when his gyrocopter contacted overhead electrical cables.
A search had been ongoing since Thursday when it became clear Mr Russell and his gyrocopter had failed to reach Stapleton Station, 80km from Katherine, as had previously been arranged.
The search effort had been hampered by the remoteness of the area.
Police divers also had to use a cage as protection from the many crocodiles in the river during the search, and the raising of the submerged gyrocopter.
In a tribute notice in today's Katherine Times, Mr Russell's family invited people to join them at the Low Level on Friday or at a further service at Wagga Wagga planned for June 22.
"He is survived by much loved family and mates across Australia," the notice reads.
"Jack was a wonderful father and support to his two children, Henry and Georgina."
The family also commented that Mr Russell's gyrocopter connected with power lines soon after take off from the Timber Creek airstrip.
"He had great affection for Northern Australia and died in country he loved in a pursuit he loved.
"Jack will be greatly missed by all."
