From the overgrown, and barely used track in 2008, Speedway Katherine has injected millions into the site, which now sees regular annual racing, and hundreds stopping by to watch.

June 1, the first meet of the year, drew a crowd of 150 to the sidelines to see races of Formula 500s, NT Sedans, Street Stocks, Solo Bikes and AMCA Nationals.

"Speedway was at a standstill," secretary of Katherine Speedway, Julie Bennett said.

She said it has taken a "strong and steady group" to get it to where it is now - a fully functioning track to rival those in larger cities.

"We have grown from strength to strength in terms of attracting classes of cars and connecting with other clubs."

It is also taking a step no other club in the Territory has taken yet, bringing solo bike racing and sidecars to a meet in August.

"We were lucky to be successful in obtaining a Katherine Town Council Community Wellbeing Grant to establish a new track surface to accommodate these classes and a Northern Territory Government Community Benefit Fund Grant for a demonstration race night on August, 3," Mrs Bennett said.

This weekend, the club is gearing up for a race which hasn't happened on the club's turf for years.

The race is expected to attract nine sprint car drivers battling it out for first place.

Races start at 5.30pm on Saturday, June 22.
