Code-named Operation Walker, the crime blitz saw a multi-faceted, cross-agency approach to the prevention of crime and increased enforcement activity in Katherine.
Police , including members from Katherine, Road Policing Command and the Mounted Unit, teamed up with Neighbourhood Watch NT, Katherine Town Council and Public Housing Safety Officers to provide a holistic approach to building and maintaining a safer Northern Territory.
Operation Walker focussed on youth, road safety, drivers of crime and empowering local residents with the necessary information to keep their homes safe, particularly in the lead up to the school holiday period.
The operation achieved significant results:
55 Houses door knocked - residents provided with NHWNT crime prevention information
- Three Arrests
- Four persons taken into Protective Custody
- Six Traffic Infringement Notices issued
- Three RBT stations conducted - 85 drivers tested
- One Notice to Appear issued
- 21 Litres of alcohol tipped out
Of note was the identification and arrest of a disqualified male drink driver with five unrestrained children in the vehicle, 3 of which were travelling in the boot of the hatchback.
A male passenger in the vehicle was also arrested for a breach of a suspended sentence.
Supt Daniel Shean from Katherine Division said, "Our focus is to continue building a safer Northern Territory and these types of operations are critical to ensure we engage with local residents at a more personal level."
"We will continue to work with our partner agencies to prevent crime and to ensure that we take appropriate enforcement action where required"
