For 30 years, Katherine Isolated Children's Service has ensured children living on some of the remotest stations and Indigenous communities have access to play based learning, which strengthens many areas of development.
According to the most recent Australian Early Development Census National Report, published in March this year, children living in very remote areas in Australia were more than twice as likely as those living in major cities to have development issues.
"This developmental vulnerability needs to be addressed in the prior to school years of early childhood when a child undergoes rapid brain development," KICS coordinator Mandy Tootell said.
"Katherine Isolated Children's Service was fortunate to be successful in its funding application for a new, purpose built trailer from the NT Government's Community Benefit Fund."
"The new trailer will ensure the remote mobile playgroup and parent information service stays on the road and continues its service provision to some of the most remote places and developmentally vulnerable children in the Northern Territory."
KICS visits 37 stations, 21 communities and 3 small townships on rotation across a region of over 750,000 square kilometres.
"The trailer will be filled with toys and resources for playgroup and will travel to wherever small children and families are living remotely so that children can experience play based learning opportunities and parents, carers and educators cam come together to share child development stories," Mrs Tootell said.
"KICS has two field teams that travel during the week facilitating playgroups at a different venue each day and camping in the field because of the remote locations and long distances travelled over gravel roads."
