A dress bought last minute, shoes dug out from the cupboard, and in the case of the winner of the over 30s category, Jaycee Goundar, a bag purchased in Manila, which just happened to match her dress.

Per usual, a fascinator from Fe, was a must have item, especially if you were vying for first place.

Fe's Variety Store owner Fe Fahey worked tirelessly for months in advance in an effort to keep up with demand for millinery.

Prior to the big day, women streamed through her store's door with requests for bespoke headwear.

It appeared to be the case for many at the races, and those competing in Fashions on the Field, to pair a few purchases with items they already had.

Some had hit the op-shops and found gems perfect for the day.

Of course there were those who had planned their outfits from head to toe weeks before the big day, and spent big.

Winner of the over 30 mens category Ross Broadbent tied together his ensemble from pieces in his wardrobe at the last minute.

"Before 30, I was a bit tighter, I must say, but beers and lifestyle have chased me down," Mr Broadbent said.

"I am very surprised I won, I just threw these things on."

Winner of the under 30 womens category, Sharon Jennings said she had purchased her jumpsuit online, but already had her shoes and bag.

And winner of the Under 30 mens category, Mitchell Dwyer found the perfect shoes at the op-shop before race day and paired them with a suit from Hugo Boss.

"This was a very unexpected win," Mr Dwyer said.

"I didn't dress planning on entering [Fashions on the Field]... very excited."
