While some media is today reporting Mr Leonardi was sacked, Mr Gunner's office is saying he is taking a "leave of absence" to focus on his health.

Mr Leonardi has long been named the most influential figure in NT politics, it is understood the Government is positioning itself to win a second term in office at next August's elections.

Sacked Minister Ken Vowles blamed Mr Leonardi's influence for his fall from grace late last year.

Mr Gunner's office today announced Emily Beresford-Cane would take on the Chief Minister's Chief of Staff role permanently.

Ms Beresford-Cane is currently the chief of staff to Attorney General Natasha Fyles.

It is understand there have been other top level changes within the Chief Minister's office.

"The Territory Labor Government is focussed on Territorians," Mr Gunner said today.

"With that in mind I have made the decision to make some changes within my office.

"My Chief of Staff Alf Leonardi and I have had a discussion. He will take a leave of absence to focus on his health.

"Emily Beresford-Cane will now take on the role of Chief of Staff permanently.

"Emily is presently the Attorney General's Chief of Staff, and has extensive experience in the private sector."
