Police, park rangers and other emergency services are scouring the area of the Gunlom Falls for the 31-year-old.
Police held a press conference this afternoon saying no sign had been found of the man, identified as Yann Buriet.
Police had been in contact with the French consulate but are yet to speak with the man's family.
Police have appealed to the public for anyone who may have come into contact with the man near Gunlom Falls over the weekend to come forward.
Initial enquiries failed to locate the man.
An aerial search resumed this morning.
Speaking on radio today, police Supt Hege Burns said there were three to four camp sites in the general area where the man could have intended to travel to.
She said travelling in the area by foot involved some unmarked and worn trails.
"He may be sitting under a bush waiting for someone to find him," she said.
