AFL NT is considering the formal request from the Big Rivers Hawks to join the Territory's premier women's league.
It comes after two successful season fielding an Under 18's girls team in the NT competition.
Women's team also took to local sporting fields last year in the local Big Rivers football competition after an upsurge in popularity.
With nine teams already in the women's league competition, all based in Darwin, it will mean a lot of travelling as overcome by out boys and girls Under 18s teams.
More than 70 girls and women signed on to take part in tough weekly training sessions to compete last season.
Eventually there were enough players to field four teams throughout that first season.
AFL NT said it had received an application from the Big River Hawks Football Club and the Tiwi Bombers Football Club to each field a women's team in the 2019/20 TIO NTFL Women's Premier League season.
As such, AFLNT is undertaking the due diligence to assess the applications which has delayed the launch of some senior fixtures for the upcoming season which were to be released on Friday.
AFLNT CEO Stuart Totham said he was encouraged by the applications and the continued growth and interest in women's footy.
"Year on year we see greater participation and interest in our women's competitions and teams, in 2018 female participation in club footy was up more than 11 per cent which is a testament to the growth.
"We welcome the applications from both the Big River Hawks and the Tiwi Bombers to field a team in the upcoming NTFL season and look forward to going through the process with them," he said.
"Any club wanting to enter a new team into an NTFL competition is required to provide detailed information that addresses club governance, demonstrates sound financial models and shows that they have enough players, accredited coaches and support to sustain their entry. This is regardless of whether they are looking to enter a full team or a trial team."
AFLNT is expecting to review the Big River Hawks and Tiwi Bombers submissions next week and will advise on the outcome in due course.
Katherine regional development manager, Julie Hunter said at the launch of the women's competition last year the four Katherine teams were putting on a good game.
"The focus is on participation and getting girls out and playing.
Ms Hunter said it is the weekly games and training sessions that are keeping the women playing each week.
She said the competition is designed to accommodate and encourage players of all skills.
"We have a few girls from NT AFL playing.
"And the rest are made up with girls who have either played just a couple of times or played in school.
"It is a real combo, each team has a good mix of experienced players and players new to the game."
The games are played back to back with the men's competition on Saturdays in Katherine.
