Police and other emergency services responded to a reported mine collapse yesterday afternoon at the mine, located about 110 kilometres north of Tennant Creek.
At about 2.40pm at the manganese mine there was a substantial wall failure on the Western Limb located at the Bootu Creek Mine site.
"An employee is believed to have been engulfed under a significant volume of soil and rock." police said.
"Extensive efforts are currently underway to locate the employee."
NT Worksafe have been notified.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding this incident have started.
The mine is owned by Singapore-based OM Holdings.
The Adelaide to Darwin rail line was closed for three days earlier this year after an ore train carrying manganese derailed near Katherine.
The mine is believed to employ more than 100 workers.
