Talking at the Oz Forum tonight, Kate and Tick Everett, named 2019 Australia's Local Hero of the Year will be joined by journalist and advocate for gender equity Virginia Haussegger, and Patricia Elliott - both also Australia Day award recipients.

It will be the first time the forum has convened in Katherine, as well as the first time it has taken place outside of Darwin since it started two years ago.

"Each speaker has a story to tell about resilience and what they have done to make a shift in the world," chair of the Australia Day Council Jeannette Button said.

The theme this year is Community Resilience: Connected, Inclusive, Empowered.

Ms Button said it was only fitting to hold the event in Katherine with three of the panelists hailing from the region.

"It will be a good opportunity to share in community discussions on issues important right across Australia, but particularly regional Australia where it is important to share ideas about building resilience," she said.

The speakers are tied by their common stories of overcoming hurdles in life and their recognition in the Australia Day awards.

"When we have Australia Day awards it is about being brave enough to step outside of your comfort zone to help others," Ms Button said.

"The winners are often unsung heroes in our communities and our panelists are great examples of people who have done things for the benefit of others."

Facilitated by the ABCs Carmen Brown, who has a strong grasp on the region's complex issues, the Q and A will delve into how working together as a community is important for a healthy society, Ms Button said.

The Oz Forum takes place at the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre on tonight, September 30 at 5.30pm.
