A fire is burning through bushland on the Stuart Highway and is heading north towards the Katherine Aquatics Centre.
But crews have been held up fighting a fire on Gorge Road, where a truck had ignited and another also near the Kathrine Sportsground on the Stuart Highway.
The Woolworths shopping complex was evacuated at 12pm today for over an hour, while waiting for emergency crews to give the all clear.
Hot and windy conditions have made for perfect fire conditions today.
Total fire bans have been in place this week in the Darwin region.
