Katherine High School offers a trio of customised strategies to inspire greater participation by students.
The Katherine Flexible Learning and Engagement Centre, the Active Learning Class and the Transition to Work class aim to produce different outcomes, but each is customised to fulfil the needs of its participants.
The centre offers contributors an opportunity to gain work experience while delivering benefits to the community.
The students are making fortnightly visits to the Katherine Hot Springs, undertaking a clean-up project with Katherine Town Council.
The objective of the project is to eliminate rubbish from the stream bed and surrounds, and as a safety measure, to remove slime from stairs at the springs.
Assistant principal, programs and wellbeing Christine Sutherland said the enterprise provides young people with an opportunity to engage positively with the community and encourages a sense of responsibility for a local attraction they and others visit regularly.
"Young people are learning about local plants and wildlife and enjoy learning outdoors," she said. "But they are also being exposed to a range of employment options, and additional work experience opportunities with Katherine Town Council."
Active Learning is the school's embryonic program, established to assist senior students to develop work-ready skills with a strong emphasis on numeracy, literacy, life skills and wellbeing.

Ms Sutherland said this footing allows students to build on their skills and confidence ahead of their migration into the Transition to Work class.
"Active learning students are able to access vocational training in secondary schools' courses, work experience opportunities, and participate in electives such as music, physical education and catering," she said.
"Katherine High School recognises that our education agenda must offer flexibility in its delivery, content and assessment, and engage with culture and the community."
