Scooping up the regional award this afternoon at the Katherine Public Library, the young writer's book will be displayed in prime position for the next month.

It isn't the first book Stoeckl has written since he moved to the Territory two years ago. He entered the annual writing competition last year and walked away with a note of confidence as he lost out on the winning title by a slither.

Months in the making, the story follows Stoeckl's real life dog Polar, who goes on adventures through the bush - there are many tangles along the way.

"I wanted to write about Polar because he escapes a lot, and I always wondered about his adventures. He looks like a nice dog but he's actually cheeky," he said.

The story is a cross between imagination and the young writer's own adventures behind his house with friends.

"The things we have seen on our adventures like dingo dens and wallabies have all been included," he said.

Moving to the Northern Territory was a clear inspiration, he said, and while the words came easily, the pictures took work.

The annual writing competition, in its 29th year, awards imagination and creativity. Entrants are required to write and produce their own book with pictures.

"The Katherine area is home to some exceptional young writers and illustrators," Katherine Town Council's Claire Johansson said as she addressed the handful of parents and children at the ceremony today.

"Noah is an enthusiastic reader who enjoys creating imaginative stories using his own life events and characters inspired by his family.

"His book will be displayed for a month at the library, together with the perpetual trophy and it will also remain in the library as a special and treasured literary work."

Eleven-year-old Sophia Bartlett was also recognised for her book titled Haunted.

The author's words were described as 'inspirational', as it told a story of love healing the past.

Last year, young budding Katherine author Olivia Russell claimed the regional title with her book The Messy Dog.
