The Bureau of Meteorology now says Katherine and lots of the region have entered "extreme heatwave" conditions.

The bureau is today predicting an easing of the extreme heat on Wednesday, but only be a degree, down to 41 degrees.

Remember, the previous record was 10 days in a row.

If the predictions come true, Katherine will record 16 days in a row above 40 degrees.

It has already smashed the previous record of 20 days above 40 degrees in any one year.

Katherine easily breached 40 yesterday with a top of 41.2 at 3pm, and stayed above 40 for two hours.

The top temperatures will be 42 today, 42 again tomorrow and then down to 31 on Wednesday before climbing to 42 again on Thursday.

The bureau says the record run will end on Friday, but only just, with a maximum of 39 degrees.

There is also an early forecast of the chance of thunderstorms on Friday with a 40 per cent chance of that happening.
