A tribute to the five years of dedicated work from the previous owners Phoebe Quilty and Gill Russell - who built it into a Katherine institution - not much has changed.
The doors shut for a week, after the last and busiest Finch Friday night of 2019, and opened with a new menu.
It has been two weeks since day one for new owner Chrissy Mckie, who has a passion for traditional, home style baking and has always dreamed of owning her own cafe.
She comes from working at the Pop Rocket and said she wanted to buy something already established.
"Katherine already has enough cafes," she said.
"I looked into doing another caravan, like the Black Russian, but that would be flooding the market.
"So taking over something that has a strong foothold in Katherine was the obvious choice.
"I could see it was working well and I could see people in the community valued it. I want to keep the same vibe going."
The menu is about variety, she says: "You don't have to eat bread if you don't want to."
"You can build your own breakfast, the Buddah Bowls have been very popular. We wanted to keep it fresh and vibrant and seasonal."
But it is the cakes which would be her main point of difference, she says.
A lifetime of Sundays spent baking with her mother in New Zealand sparked a love of sifting and stirring.
"There is a bit of a gap in the market when it comes to home baked cakes in Katherine. What we do here is traditional recipes from your grandma's cookbook that I have adapted over the years.
"You don't need to have all these special ingredients. I am stripping it back. I just want people to come here and enjoy what they eat," she said.
There are plans to carry on the twice monthly Friday night tradition of music and food, many in Katherine have come to cherish, starting from next year.
Renovating the back garden and painting the front entrance are items high on the agenda as well.
The Finch is open 7.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 8.30 to 1pm on Saturday. It is closed on Sunday.
