During the hottest months of the year when temperatures soar past 40 degrees, it is one of the only team sports that soldiers on.
It fell to the wayside for a couple of years, according to the secretary of the Katherine Rugby Union, Sharon Jennings, as work commitments took precedence and a lack of players meant a full team was hard to come by.
But this year, a group of women have revived the sport, bringing back rugby seven's, the game previously only played by men in Katherine, and encouraging more players.
So far, Katherine teams have battled it out and won rounds of the Northern Territory's Rugby Union's Summer of Sevens.
There was an unparalleled turn out of young, budding athletes at the first junior session, earlier in the month.
"We even have kids travelling in from stations to come and participate," Ms Jennings said.
"The interest is growing more and more among the junior competitors thanks to the likes of Jim Leonhardt and his team of volunteers.
Even the Golden Oldies have seen a surge in numbers: "It is a very fun and social game for anyone over the age of 35 for both men and women. We even have blokes playing that have been playing the sport for over 40 years."
This Saturday, to keep the momentum going, the Katherine Rugby Union has a big day planned for round five.
"It is a regular round celebrating rugby," Ms Jennings said.
"We're bringing the fun back into rugby, and still trying to get more people involved, before we break for Christmas in three weeks."
Rounds kick off at 4pm at the Katherine Sportsground, with junior games first.
The Golden Oldies play their game at 6, the women's rugby sevens starts at 7pm and then the Barbarians will take on the Pirates at 7.30pm.
