Zac Whiting, now living on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland was arrested about 2.45am on Friday.
After an alleged dispute with a security guard over a stolen mobile phone, the 18-year-old is in a Kuta police station cell.
He has been visited by Australian television media in the stationl.
Whiting has been named as a suspect on a charge of assault, which carries a maximum two years and eight months in jail, and will remain in the police cell while the investigation takes place.
Whiting is also an accomplished AFL player.
