The 27-year-old has now been missing since Tuesday.
Police today revealed the man had broken away from the woman he was travelling with to search for water.
Their vehicle had broken down on a track about 12km south of Beswick.
The man and woman decided to walk back to Beswick while other members of their group remained with the vehicle until help arrived.
The female arrived at Beswick dehydrated and in poor physical condition.
It is understood that the pair separated when the man went searching for water.
An extensive search continues for the 27-year-old man from Beswick, described as Aboriginal appearance, 165mm tall and 45kgs. Last seen wearing only dark shorts, no shirt and carrying a blue backpack.
Search conditions continue to be difficult, with temperatures of 40 degrees.
Resources being used in the search include 20 police officers, 3 NTES volunteers, two helicopters and numerous vehicles.
