The Australian team is due to leave for India today.
Short has been brought into the squad for Sean Abbott, who suffered a moderate side strain playing for the Sydney Sixers against the Sydney Thunder during a Big Bash League match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
He is now considered one of the world's most explosive short-form batsmen.
National Selector Trevor Hohns said: "It is extremely unfortunate for Sean who is very much a part of our white ball squad plans leading into the ICC T20 World Cup and the World Cup.
"D'Arcy offers the squad another spinning all-rounder option along with Ashton Agar, which along with the four world class fast bowlers and Adam Zampa balances the squad out nicely.
"His proven record and ability to bat anywhere in the order will also be a great asset to the squad," Mr Hohns said.
Abbott is expected to be sidelined for 3-4 weeks.
Tour of India:
- January 14: First ODI Australia v India, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
- January 17: Second ODI Australia v India, Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot
- January 19: Third ODI Australia v India, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru
Short was named the NT's Sportsperson of the Year in 2019.
He made his T20 International debut for Australia against New Zealand on February 3, 2018 and made his One Day International debut for Australia against England on June 16, 2018.
The Katherine-born cricketer is on a trajectory which will one day take him into the national Test team, according to many.
