It would be the first of three times her mother had to leave horses and cattle to fend for themselves in the paddocks, round the dogs and the cats into the car and leave behind her house and belongings.
The fire tore through the small town, like many others during the unprecedented bushfire season, but she was one of the lucky ones.
"I felt powerless so far away and unable to help," Ms Garrett said.
"The fire came right up to the road opposite her house, she said she couldn't see five feet in front of her because of the smoke.
"It was the most terrifying ordeal as she was constantly on standby, ready to leave everything behind."
Like many people living in Katherine, Leah Garrett watched on as friends and family faced Australia's worst fire season.
Now she is joining thousands of people fundraising in the wake of disaster.
Leah Garrett, Renee Redfern, Liana Quirk and Krissy Lambert are hosting an auction fundraiser on February 29.
They hope to raise $60,000 to donate to Need to Feed, a disaster relief organisation mostly supporting farmers.
We all felt like we needed to do something to help.

"We all felt like we needed to do something to help," Ms Garrett said.
"The money will go directly to farmers and the firefighting volunteers in the area where my mum was evacuated from her home.
"It is a cause close to all of our hearts, and even though many of us here in Katherine were not directly impacted by the fires, most of us would know someone who was."
The Aussies for Aussies fundraiser is taking place on February 29 at Mahoganys.
Tickets cost $60, with all proceeds going towards the charity Need to Feed, and can be purchased at the Katherine Town Council, Katherine Real Estate or Terrace Emporium.
