Tropical Cyclone Esther crossed the coast near the Northern Territory/Queensland border around 11am yesterday as a category 1 system, but quickly lost strength and has now been downgraded back to a low.
The ex-cyclone brought 168mm of rain to McArthur River Mine and 131mm to Borroloola over night.
The Bureau has released a short clip showing where the rain fell and what is expected as the tropical low travels west over the next week.
Katherine could see some more rain later today, with 1.2mm already recorded at the official weather station at Tindal.
Heavier drenchings are expected on Wednesday and Thursday with daily falls of between 20-50mm and up to 100mm.
The Bureau says the majority of the heavy rainfall and damaging winds will occur over the western Carpentaria, northwestern Barkly, southeastern Daly and Gregory Districts tomorrow.
The same is predicted for Thursday, with a very high chance of rain and thunderstorms over the Daly, Gregory and western Carpentaria Districts.
