A police media spokeswoman said the police were turning their vehicle about 8.45 last night after receiving an urgent call for assistance.
"Whilst conducting a U-turn, the police driver did not see a culvert which resulted in the vehicle rolling onto its side," the spokeswoman said.
The roads were also slippery after it has started to rain, Katherine received 13mm overnight.
As a result of the crash, which was attended by many emergency services, the driver was subjected to a roadside breath test for alcohol and drugs and returned a negative result for both.

The police spokeswoman said because of the very slow speed at which the U-turn was attempted, neither the driver or passenger were injured.
"At the time of the crash, the roads were wet and it was raining," the spokeswoman said.
"The matter is under investigation."
