Tradition was protected by innovation as social distancing requirements made the usual dawn service and march impossible.
As planned, many of the town's suburban streets joined in the nationwide Light Up The Dawn initiative by lighting candles and taking to their driveways for a minute's silence and the Last Post played through speakers.

Holtze Street resident Alicia Glenfell made the effort this morning and shared her experience with the Katherine Times.
"Given the current circumstances, just to be a part of such a significant event and show our appreciation was a great feeling," she said.
"There were at least 7 that participated in Holtze Street this morning. A quick 'good morning' to all beforehand and then commemorations began.
"Seeing the community come together, even if it was in our driveways, was very special - community spirit at its finest," Alicia said.
As shown by comments made by Alicia's son, Cassius Mole, the unprecedented service's significance hit home for even the town's younger members.
"Cassius said he felt very proud and seeing all the candles lit up looked beautiful," Alicia said.
Later in the morning, members of the Motor Vehicle Enthusiasts Club of the NT orchestrated a drive around the area to gather in commemoration without risking anybody's health.
The mixture of vintage and military vehicles were a spectacular sight as they made their way down Katherine's main drag, drawing smiles from residents young and old before heading off down the Victoria highway.
Meanwhile, others found significance in placing wreaths at the foot of Katherine's cenotaph, with Katherine Town Council Mayor Fay Miller and CEO Ian Bodill among those to visit the memorial.
The stack began at dawn, and continued growing throughout the morning and afternoon.
Well done Katherine.
