Officer-in-charge of Katherine Fire Station, Bernie Wellsford wants the public to be patient on the roads with a number of preventative burns planned around the town early this dry season.

Some more fuel reduction burns will be conducted along the Victoria Highway behind Katherine Rural Supplies focussed on Thursday.

Last season produced a lot of large fires in the Katherine region.

One October fire last year from the Stuart Estate area grew in size to 40,000ha.
