But visitors from anywhere other than Victoria and Sydney will be allowed into the Territory after the clock ticks past 12 tonight.
So what is the official advice?
If you are intending to travel to the Territory from an identified coronavirus hotspot you are advised to cancel your plans.
Likewise if you are a Territorian intending to travel to a hotspot you are advised to cancel your plans.
Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the NT's "hard borders" are not going anywhere.
"Our police are not going anywhere. If you cross our borders, if you fly into the Territory, they will be there to greet you.
"They will stay there to monitor and interview arrivals, direct them to quarantine where necessary, and stop any wannabe-rule breakers."
There will be no exemptions other than important freight for those travelling from a hotspot.
So here are the new rules:
For arrivals after 12.01am Friday:
NT borders will be open to many areas of Australia, however remain closed to arrivals from the whole of Victoria and those from the Greater Sydney area.
Hotspots can change without notice, it is up to you to be aware of the changing circumstances.
Any interstate arrivals, regardless of where you are travelling from, must complete a border entry form.
All arrivals to the Northern Territory will also complete another form upon arrival at the border. This form equates to a statutory declaration. If you're found to have provided misleading information on your arrival form criminal charges may apply.
All non-essential travel should be reconsidered.
If you have traveled through or from a nominated hotspot in the last 14 days, you will be directed into mandatory supervised quarantine at Howard Springs in Darwin or an identified facility in Alice Springs, and charged $2500.
If you cannot demonstrate that you HAVE NOT been in a hotspot, you will not be able to enter the Northern Territory.
The onus is on the traveler to demonstrate you have not been in a hotspot within the past 14 days e.g. receipts, bank statements or other documentation - your word alone is NOT enough.
For arrivals by road after 12.01am Friday:
All arrivals to the Northern Territory must complete a border entry form. This must be completed within 72 hours of arrival at the border. Please note your registration number when lodging this form for reference at the border.
All arrivals to the Northern Territory will also complete another form upon arrival at the border. This form equates to a statutory declaration. If you're found to have provided misleading information on your arrival form criminal charges may apply.
Travelers arriving by road at the Territory border having traveled through or from a nominated hotspot in the last 14 days, will need to proceed directly to mandatory quarantine facilities in Alice Springs or Darwin. You must travel direct to this point. You may stop briefly to re-fuel, using contactless means to pay and maintaining physical distance from all persons unknown to you at all times.
You will have up to 72 hours to reach your quarantine facilities in Alice Springs or Darwin, whichever is closest to you.
If you are travelling with pets, it is your responsibility to make arrangements for them to go into boarding facilities at your expense, prior to entry into the NT. The NT Government will not have provision to care for your pets or animals.
At any locations you stop at to re-fuel or purchase meals, you MUST exercise physical distancing, hand and cough hygiene and we would recommend wiping down any surfaces you touch (that are not your own) with antibacterial wipes.
You MUST NOT stop along the way to purchase groceries or supplies, you need to proceed direct to your quarantine facility.
If you are from a hotspot and previously held an exemption to travel this is revoked effective immediately.
