Anecdotal reports do keep filtering in about high numbers of caravans on the roads and in caravan parks near the border, as they have for weeks now.
Yet for three caravan park operators in Katherine, early signs are that the continuing uncertainty around possible further border closures may still keep travelers away.
None of the parks contacted today reported high numbers of bookings, with one even reporting cancellations as COVID-19 fears rise around the country.
"We haven't had any bookings from interstate travellers for next week yet," Belinda Biddle from the Boab Caravan Park said.
"We've actually had people who already made bookings call up and cancel, because they're worried about getting stuck here.
"They're worried they won't be able to get home - we know from those people that there are a large number of caravans around the border areas.
"But whether they'll still come with what's now starting to happen in NSW, Victoria and even maybe Queensland we just don't know.
"I don't have a crystal ball and neither does anyone else, so we'll just have to wait and see," she said.
NT Chief Minister Michael Gunner has closed the NT to anybody from 'hotspot' areas including all of Victoria and Sydney.
Yet park operators still hold concerns about how screening will effectively take place.
"We've got about 15 booked at this stage, but I certainly wouldn't call it a rush," Riverview Tourist Village's Fiona Young said.
"We're still wary of people doing the right thing, I know they'll still be vetting people at the border but how that can be done effectively I'm not sure.
"Who is to say nobody from a hot-spot area has entered Queensland or South Australia and spread it there, all it takes is one case and we can be in a scary position very quickly.
"Some will come absolutely, it won't be Friday but it'll probably be around the start of next week," she said.
Katherine Holiday Park Manager Tracey Bache meanwhile is hoping tourists will extend their usual plans past the customary dry-season peak period.
"We don't have anybody until Monday but we have had a number of bookings for then," she said.
"We had a friend driving down to Port Augusta who said between Alice and Port Augusta he counted 600 caravans.
"It's just all hearsay at this point though we don't know, hopefully Monday I'll be too busy to answer your call but it's just wait and see.
"We've got people booked for a few weeks or a month, our hope is because their plans have been shortened they still want to get around to everything.
"Usually October they're all sort of leaving or gone but we're hoping with the shorter timeframe they'll stay this year," Ms Bache said.
