A top temperature of 37 degrees is forecast for Cup day.
The Bureau of Meteorology today said Territorians in inland areas may feel uncomfortably warm this week, with maximum temperatures increasing to well above average (but not record breaking).
But with a 37 degree forecast for Saturday, Katherine's August record is 37.4 degrees from back in 2016.
It was a warm 35 degrees at the races last year.
Daily maximums of around 35-36°C are expected in Katherine, Jabiru and Douglas River for the next few days, the bureau says.
Minimum temperatures are going to rise as well, to 17-18 degrees.
In Darwin, the minimum (overnight) temperatures are expected to stay just above 20°C, with daytime maximum temperatures sitting at about 31°C (the August average) for the rest of the week.
As is typical for August in the Territory, fog and low cloud have been appearing during the mornings and are expected again tomorrow for the northwest and eastern Top End.
In the south of the NT last night a cloud band brought rain, with a 24 hour total of 19mm to 9am recorded in Giles just west of the NT border.
Within the Territory, 6.4mm fell at Yulara and 6mm at Wallunguru to 9am this morning. The cloud band is expected to clear by Wednesday.
There is a slight chance for more rain on Thursday and Friday in the Simpson District, with a very slight chance of thunderstorms in the east Simpson district on Friday.
