The NT Government announced the construction of 15 pre-fabricated classrooms for NT schools in April, to help support the construction industry through COVID-19, while replacing infrastructure deemed beyond repair in some remote communities.
The locations of the new classrooms has been determined by need, with replacement of end-of-life infrastructure prioritised.
Easing capacity pressures was also a selection priority.
The classrooms will be constructed in urban centres and relocated to their new school sites.
Remote communities will receive 10 classrooms, while five bound for urban sites will accommodate Students with Additional Needs.
The chosen sites are:
- Alekarenge School (3)
- Woodroffe Primary School (3)
- Newcastle Waters School (1)
- Gapuwiyak School (2)
- Neutral Junction School (1)
- Mutitjulu School (1)
- Ngukurr School (2)
- Nightcliff Primary School - Nemarluk Annex (2)
The $11.4 million program is expected to directly support at least 60 local construction jobs.
In addition to its new classrooms, Alekarenge School will also upgrade its early years playground, as part of the $300,000 Building Better Schools funding all Territory schools have been entitled to over the past four years.
Education Minister Lauren Moss said "Quality infrastructure underpins quality learning and the Territory Government is pleased to deliver these new pre-fabricated classrooms to the schools and students who need them most.
"These classrooms have everything modern classrooms demand to support learning, from quality acoustics, to state-of-the-art IT connectivity and, importantly for Territory schools, air-conditioning.
