The aging members of the "stolen" Aboriginal children are invited to attend but the class action would involved deceased estates as well, meaning children could be part of the bid for compensation.
Shine Lawyers, who took forward Katherine's successful class action over property value falls due to PFAS contamination, is proposing the action.
Shine Lawyers will provide information on the proposed action in Katherine tomorrow, and Darwin on Wednesday.
The meeting will be held at Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre tomorrow (Tuesday) between 4-6pm.
Shine Lawyers says if you are either of the following, you may be eligible to join this legal action:
An Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander member of the stolen generation (including people who were fostered and/or adopted).
A descendant of a member of the stolen generation who has passed away.
Shine Lawyers' senior associate Tristan Gaven said for the purposes of the action, Stolen Generation is said to be those removed from their families before 1978.
It would not pursue the Commonwealth for those involved in similar practices during the Federal Government's "intervention" in 2007.
"Arguably it is still happening today," Mr Gaven said.
Stolen Generations is taken to mean the Aboriginal and Torres Straight children removed from their families as a result of various government policies.
