Under options put forward by Katherine Town Council yesterday, the new requirement for a yellow bin recycling service would cost between $3.50 to $14 per fortnight per household.

The financing options were included in a survey released yesterday by council under its agreement with the NT EPA to produce a waste strategy.

The council says Katherine currently recycles about around 18% of all waste.

A kerbside recycling collection service is a part of the deal made with the EPA to avoid court action on its illegal tyre dump which caught fire on Territory Day last year.

Katherine residents pay $360 annually for the weekly collection of the green bin which ends up in landfill.

In Darwin the fee is $278 for the kerbside collection of both green and yellow bins.

Darwin has ready access to recycling firms which Katherine does not.

Katherine residents already enjoy free access to the waste facility as well.

In Palmerston, the charge is $490 annually for the weekly pick-up of a 120 litre green bin and the 240 litre yellow recycling bin each fortnight.

Alice Springs does not provide a recycling pick-up, but does provide free access to recycling skips as its waste facility.

Under the possible price rises issued by the Katherine council yesterday, a fortnightly collection of a yellow recycling bin would cost a minimum of $3.50 per fortnight or a maximum of $14 per fortnight.

Residents are being asked in the survey to indicate a preference, or to state they don't want any increase at all.
